I eat up frets, like their candy! I rub them down, clean after useage and they just go away. I've been considering using .046 x .113 SS on an acoustic, but have never heard anything about them except on electrics. What's the buzz on SS acoustics(so to speak). I know they're a pain to work and all. I was just wondering if anybody had experience with big SS. Thanks Billy Dean |

They're a pain to work with, for sure, but other than that, the player would only notice the ultra-smooth surface. Otherwise, they are like any other fret. Why so big? |

If you visit Harry Fleishman's site, you can find an article on "work hardening" fretwire. I haven't tried it yet, but the theory is very sound. He starts by bending the wire back & forth a few times in a fret bender tool. After the fret job is complete, he burnishes each fret with a spoon, further hardening the surface. Harry claims this greatly extends the life of standard fret wire. |
Why so big?
After playing for so long, I think I've developed the Vulcan death grip. The larger the fret and radius the longer they have to last. It's not so much the changing them it's just that I wait so long, because I hate doing it. Standard fret wire goes away fast, as mentioned. Even the guys at the Fret House mentioned the grip. I play a lot! Thanks guys!! Billy Dean |
